A masterpiece of Broadway musical comedy, Company captivated audiences with its themes but also with its modernity. A work made up of fragments of life, magnified by Sondheim’s unique artistry.
I first went to New York City in 2002. Instead of attending my college graduation, I was gifted the opportunity to visit New York, a life long dream for this theatre lover. Coincidentally, as the plane was getting ready to descend and the nighttime cityscape outline of Manhattan magically appeared at the window, Stephen Sondheim’s Company was playing on the discman. Little did I know that this simple serendipity would become a tradition: wherever I went, I would play the opening of Company whenever I would land in New York.
When I heard that Opéra Nice Côte d’Azur would present a production of Company (nonetheless music directed by Broadway veteran Larry Blank), I jumped at the chance to reconnect with my former home of 14 years. It was like a familiar friend’s surprise visit at your new home. And how befitting since Company begins with our lead Bobby (played with charm and sincerity by Gaétan Borg) as he is welcomed to his surprise 35th birthday by close friends.
As much as the musical is about a character in search of – if not, in search of the meaning of – companionship, Company is also a love letter to New York. With an original book by George Furth, New York City becomes an additional character, ever present as Bobby navigates through his journey accompanied by his friends and their quirky and sometimes confusing relationship dynamics and the it-just-doesn’t-seem-to-work-out romantic encounters.
Co-produced with Génération Opera in a limited engagement Francophone tour which includes Avignon at the end of December then Geneva, Rouen and Paris, among other stops in the coming year – Company delights in this modern interpretation that also seems to slow down the fast American pace to a more intentional and leisurely rhythm that’s more akin to French sensibilities.
While the songs are sung in its original English language, the book has also been gloriously adapted to the French language by Stéphane Laporte. Traditionally, the American musical would be about speed with fast talking characters where the audience would sit back and be a passive spectator in Bobby’s existential quest for THE one. Here, Laporte’s adaptation provides director James Bonas just the right amount of ingredients to tell a story in just the right pace and without force; nothing more, nothing less. The new book is not just a direct translation but an adaptation and how it becomes a gateway for an American piece that can also organically be French.
The musical originally premiered on Broadway in 1970, a time devoid of modern technology such as cell phones and instant delivery emails (and being tethered to it). While this production doesn’t exactly specify a time period, it still manages to feel contemporary without being overrun by technological noise and distractions. Here, the missing modernity of technology is set aside from the table to allow the characters to talk and connect. What is second nature to the French way of living, this becomes a nostalgic approach for the American material of the days gone by.
In a scene between Bobby and Kathy (played with such sincerity by Lucille Cazenave), a simple scene in Central Park becomes a moment of reflection as the two characters realize what could have been. Oh, if only times were different. But the time wasn’t different. The time is now and we certainly don’t miss (or taken out of the realism) that none of them ever take out their cell phones.
In the Face à Face artist conversation held prior to the start of the performances, Blank mentioned that this production returns to its original orchestrations, which haven’t been heard since 1970. He added that if Sondheim were alive today, he would have been very pleased with the production. Perhaps, that could be attributed to the musical rhythm once again in line with the pace of the book. With Blank at the helm, the beautifully executed orchestrations filled the opera house with the musicality Sondheim was best known for.
The art of art succeeds when there is balance in collaboration. Here, the production doesn’t need to replicate the Broadway production. Instead, it makes it its own and lets the other talents in the company serve as special ingredients for this musical feast.
Borg, who infuses Bobby with that Everyman quality making him all so familiar that he could be one of our friends, delivers the heart-tugging “Being Alive” that makes one want to physically embrace him as he makes the emotional realization from wanting “someone” to “somebody.”
Jasmine Roy as the bombastic Joanne truly inhabits that typical no-nonsense New Yorker with her acerbic wit and dry sarcasm. She delivers the 11 o’clock number “The Ladies Who Lunch” with increasing drunkenness on every “I’ll drink to that!” before finally reaching the “Rise!” crescendo that is scary and entertaining at the same time. Roy’s Joanne makes her so familiar and approachable that she would remind us of that friend whom we love but – let’s face it – sometimes can be embarrassing to be seen with.
As the free-spirited Marta, Neïma Naouri transforms the original hippie character into a modern day Gen Alpha whom you are sure is barely pulling it together at New York University. Originally established as a character to contrast the jaded 1970 and anti-war activism, here Naouri is a breath of fresh air and optimism that her character finally makes sense instead of the previous new-age character she has usually been portrayed. She’s both intelligent and emotionally intelligent, and perhaps a little too advanced for the other characters older than her.
As the self-described “not smart” flight April, Camille Nicolas provides ample comic relief without being the trite butt of the joke. Her breathy delivery alone elicited chuckles and head shaking oh-my-god, in the same breath.
And sprinkled throughout the production is Ewan Jones’ vibrant choreography. From the toe-tapping tribute to the Andrews Sisters “You Could Drive a Person Crazy” to the raucous Vaudeville Act II opener “Side by Side by Side / What Would We Do Without You?”, Jones has course by course plated first-rate dishes that make this musical feast.
What is most endearing about this production of Company is its heart. From the very first notes, you can feel Blank’s reverence to his old pal Steve’s music, creating such infectious joy for the cast and musicians to inhabit. In the end, it was a fun and nostalgic night at the theatre and in good company.

Monte-Carlo Opera stages a new production of Richard Wagner’s Die Walküre (The Valkyrie), the second opera of his greatest work, Der Ring des Nibelungen, also known as his Ring Cycle.
This production of The Valkyrie stars German baritone Matthias Goerne as Wotan, King of the Gods, German soprano Libby Sokolowski as Sieglinde, Wotan’s daughter, and Swedish tenor Joachim Bäckström as Siegmund, with whom Sieglinde is in love. Hunding – Sieglinde’s violent husband – is sung by German bass Wilhelm Schwinghammer, Belorussian mezzo-soprano Ekaterina Semenchuk is Fricka, Wotan’s wife, and German soprano Nancy Weissbach takes the role of Brünnhilde. Davide Livermore directs, and Gianluca Capuano leads Les Musiciens du Prince – Monaco.
The Ring Cycle consists of four operas – Das Rheingold, Die Walküre, Siegfried and Götterdämmerung,b written, with Wagner’s own libretto, over a 26-year period between 1848 and 1874, and totalling 15 hours in duration. The Ring Cycle is regarded as Wagner’s greatest work, and with it he pioneered a new form of epic music drama known as Bühnenfestspiel – a stage festival play – which featured one story, told across three days of the Bayreuth Festival, with a prelude the night before. The Cycle tells of a cursed ring which Wotan, in a desire to gain power, steals from the dwarf Alberich, leading to a series of curses which affects all the characters in the operas. With each opera having its own tale of love, family and power, they are set against the backdrop of Norse mythology, as giants, dwarfs, nymphs and deities quarrel and clash with each other, leading finally to the end of the gods themselves in Götterdämmerung (the Twilight of the Gods). The Ring Cycle premiered in 1876 at the Bayreuth Festspielhaus,
In this part of Wagner’s Tetralogy, we see the consequences of what had happened in The Rheingold – the stealing of the ring – and the beginning of the effect on everyone concerned. Sieglinde manages to break away from her violent husband Hunding with the help of Siegmund, an unknown boy. She falls in love and conceives a child with him – only to find out that he is her lost twin and like her an illegitimate child of Wotan’s. The child is Siegfried – who features in the following opera.
The second act of The Valkyrie deals with the confrontation between Wotan and his wife Fricka, where she argues with him, forcing him into bowing to laws more universal than any god’s power. We also see Brünnhilde, who faces expulsion from Valhalla and the loss of her deity – the harsh punishment for helping Siegmund and Sieglinde when they needed it most.
At the end of the opera, Wotan remains a broken man who has lost the respect of his wife, banished his favourite daughter, provoked the death of his beloved children, and forsakes his godly might. The Valkyrie premiered in Munich,at the Royal Theatre, on 26th June, 1870.
Matthias Goerne takes the role of Wotan. Artist in Residence at Shanghai Symphony Orchestra for the 2025/2025 season, he is regarded as one of the most versatile and internationally sought-after vocalists and a frequent guest at renowned festivals and concert halls. He has appeared on the world’s principal opera stages including the Metropolitan Opera in New York, Royal Opera House Covent Garden, Teatro Real in Madrid, Paris National Opera and the Vienna State Opera. His roles range from Wotan, Wolfram in Wagner’s Tannhäuser, Amfortas in his Parsifal, Orest in Richard Strauss’ Elektra, and Jochanaan in his Salome, to the title roles in Béla Bartók’s Duke Bluebeard’s Castle and Alban Berg’s Wozzeck.
Libby Sokolowski who has received acclaim from Opera Newsfor her “rich, excellent instrument and considerable artistry”, sings Sieglinde. This is a role and house debut for her, and following this engagement, she returns to the St Galler Festspiele to debut Amneris in Verdi’s Aida. Previously a member of the ensemble at the Theater St Gallen, she has also performed there to great acclaim as Elvira in Verdi’s Ernani, Fata Morgana in Prokofiev’s Die Liebe zu den drei Orangen, Rosalinde in Johan Strauss’ Die Fledermaus, and the soprano soloist in a scenic production of Verdi’s Messa da Requiem, for which she was previously praised by Online Merker for her “full, broad, dramatic soprano”.
The Swedish tenor Joachim Bäckström takes the role of Siegmund. He opened the 2023/2024 season with the world premiere of the opera Mythomania by Paula af Malmborg Ward at the Göteborg Opera, where he sang the role of Francis. He also returned to the title role in Britten’s Peter Grimes at the Janáček Theatre in Brno and made his role debut in the title role in Wagner’s Parsifal at the Royal Swedish Opera in Stockholm. He was previously a guest at the Finnish National opera where sang Siegmund in a new production of Die Walküre.
Hunding is sung by Wilhelm Schwinghammer whose expansive repertoire ranges from roles of the Baroque repertoire to contemporary music, and covers all important roles of his voice catergory such as Figaro in Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro, Leporello in his Don Giovanni, Sarastro in his Die Zauberflöteand Osmin in his Die Entführung aus dem Serail. In this current season, he sings the role of Ochs in Richard Strauss’ Der Rosenkavalier at the Baden-Baden Festspielhaus, as well as at the Staatstheater Nürnberg. He will also make his debut at the Grand Theatre Shanghai as Hunding in a new production of Die Walküre.
Ekaterina Semenchuk has won acclaim as an interpreter of Verdian roles. Her repertoire includes Azucena in Il trovatore, Princess Eboli in Don Carlo, Amneris in Aïda, Lady Macbeth in Macbeth, Federica in Luisa Miller, Preziosilla in La forza del destino and the mezzo-soprano solo and in his Requiem. Her recent engagements include performances at the Teatro alla Scala in Mussorgsky’s Khovanshchina, the Staatsoper Unter den Linden in Berlin in Macbeth, the Teatro Real in Madrid in his Don Carlo and Il trovatore, the Opéra national de Paris in Berlioz’ Les Troyens, and at San Francisco Opera and the Metropolitan Opera in Mascagni’s Cavalleria rusticana.
Nancy Weissbach’s next appareances include Brünnhilde in the Ring at Staatstheater Kassel and Oldenburg Theatre, as well as Bianca in von Zemlinsky’s Eine florentinische Tragödie at NNTT Tokyo. Recently she made her debut as Agathe in von Weber’s Der Freischütz at Opéra Royal de Wallonie in Liège and as Vitellia in Mozart’s La clemenza di Tito at the theatre in Sanssouci in Potsdam, and sang Marschallin in Richard Strauss’ Der Rosenkavalier at the Israeli Opera in Tel Aviv and in Bonn.
Also in the cast are Sofia Fomina as Helmwige, Natalia Tanasii as Gerhilde, Maire Therese Carmack as Waltraute, Heike Wessels as Siegrune, Anna Lapkovskaja as Grimgerde, Freya Apffelstaedt as Schwertleite, Niamh O’Sullivan as Rosseweisse and Kaarin Cecilia Phelps as Ortlinde.

Later this evening, Compagnie Leïla Ka presents “Maldonne” at Scene 55 in Mougins at 5:30 pm. This piece for five performers is choreographed by Leïla Ka. The event is now sold out.
The final performance of the day in the Festival de Danse sees Companhia Paulo Ribeiro & Orchestre national de Cannes bring its “Louis Lui” to the Théâtre Debussy, in the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès in Cannes at 8:30 pm. Tickets may be reserved online.

La Mairie de Cannes invites the public to meet the artist Jean-Michel Othoniel at 2:30 pm today at La Malmaison, on the occasion of the signing of the catalogue of his exhibition Poussière d’étoiles. This magical and poetic exhibition, running until 4th January, 2026, features 91 works exploring the themes of glass and light. Claude Arnaud, author, and Hanna Baudet, curator of the exhibition, co-author of the catalogue, and director of the Pôle d’Art Contemporain de Cannes, will also both be in attendance.

The Académie Rainier III hosts two concerts at the Théâtre des Variétés in Monaco today, the first ‘Voices & Plucked Strings‘ taking place at 3 pm. This performance will take the audience on a musical journey through a variety of repertoires, from neo-classical to folk and film music. Featuring students from the adult vocal ensemble, who will perform excerpts from Julien Joubert’s Huit poèmes de Ronsard, a composer with whom the Académie has already collaborated on several occasions. The mandolin and plucked-string guitar classes will also be on hand to perform both folk and film pieces, including iconic film compositions. We have more action from the ongoing Festival de Danse with a performance by Robyn Orlin with the Garage Dance Ensemble and Johannesburg musical duo uKhoiKhoi. The Monte-Carlo Jazz Festival concludes tonight with Asaf Avidan opening a new chapter on stage, this time surrounded by his full band. These masters create musical lines that draw shared landscapes at the intersection of jazz and traditional music, in perfect harmony. The Festival Off of the 23rd Festival de Musique Sacrée continues in Cagnes-sur-Mer with a performance at 3:30 pm this afternoon by La Compagnie de la Voix at Eglise de la Sainte-Famille. On the programme there will be some Vivaldi and Fauré but also spirituals and contemporary works by artists such as Victor C. Johnson, Andrew Parr, Ola Gjeilo and Rollo Dilworth. The Festival de Danse continues at the Théâtre Debussy at the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès in Cannes with the incandescent, transgressive, and virtuosic Rocío Molina. Her art of flamenco is a thrilling risk, to be discovered in this new work. A premiere in the region, this is a co-production with Cannes – Côte d’Azur Dance Festival. Look out for Spanish dancer Lorena Nogal just before the Rocío Molina performance. She is performing a series of four original solos in theatre lobbies, created especially for the 2025 Festival. Monaco also marks World AIDS Day with a moving memorial organized by Fight AIDS Monaco, the charity founded by H.S.H. Princess Stéphanie at the Oceanography Museum at noon. The event honours those lost to the epidemic while raising awareness and promoting solidarity, prevention, and continued support for those living with HIV today.

The legacy of the great master Monteverdi will resonate in the Église du Sacré-Cœur des Moneghetti (Church of the Sacred Heart of the Moneghetti) at 8:30 pm tonight, with a concert by Ensemble Les Passions, a Baroque orchestra in residence in Montauban, founded by recorder player Jean-Marc Andrieu. Composed of four musicians, including two violins, a viola da gamba, and an organ, the ensemble will be accompanied by the chamber choir Dulci Jubilo, in a performance imbued with “sweet joy,” as its name suggests, and respecting the traditional playing techniques of period instruments. This programme, entitled 1643, The Italian Heritage, explores the connection between Claudio Monteverdi and Marc-Antoine Charpentier, represented by the Roman composer Carissimi, Charpentier’s teacher, who in 1648 composed the famous biblical oratorio Jephthah, considered one of the finest masterpieces of the Italian Baroque. It is conducted by Jean-Marc Andrieu, in collaboration with composer and choirmaster Christopher Gibert, who brings his creativity and a fresh perspective to the choral repertoire in France. This one is really for our Irish readers! The Late Late Toy Show is on RTÉ1 tonight (watch it on the RTÉ Player or get them to change channels in Ma Nolan’s!) Last year’s edition attracted one of the biggest Irish TV audiences ever and 169 grants, totalling €5 million, were distributed following the generosity of the Late Late Toy Show viewers. The city’s latest addition to its mural programme lives in an unexpected place: a highly frequented traffic tunnel. But that’s not all…
David Lisnard is convinced that public art belongs everywhere, not just in galleries, and he has spent over a decade embellishing the city he governs with murals and sculptures from local and international, known and unknown artists. But unlike the cinema-focused frescoes that decorate many building facades across Cannes, this 23rd mural in the ongoing programme of public art installations shifts the aesthetic entirely:
A 172 metre (188 yards) long manga-inspired piece now adorns the Ferrage tunnel, one of central Cannes’ busiest traffic routes beneath the voie rapide.
Artist Yannick Bretin, a young illustrator known for his work focused on sustainable development and the environment, has turned 447 square metres (4,800 sq.ft.) of once utilitarian concrete into a monumental mural. Vivid colours and dynamic forms blend pop art, street art, and the psychedelic graphics of the 1970s and 1980s with unmistakable references to 1980s Japanese manga and cartoons.
The Ferrage tunnel sits beneath the voie rapide and serves as one of central Cannes’ busiest traffic routes, handling constant vehicle flow to the municipal car park and the Pont Carnot intersection. The location is purely functional. Bretin’s mural doesn’t change that purpose but radically alters the experience of passing through.
Mayor Lisnard describes the project as proof that art can inhabit everyday spaces. The fresco uses dibond panels rather than direct wall painting, a practical choice given the tunnel environment. Before installation, the city renovated the tunnel’s walls and upgraded the lighting system to properly illuminate the artwork. The new lighting illuminates Bretin’s work without glare, creating conditions for the mural to function as intended.
Prior to this piece, Cannes’ mural programme has always centred on cinema. The 22 existing works scattered across the city pay tribute to actors, directors, and films connected to the annual Film Festival and its stars. Among the most widely recognizable faces and scenes: Jean-Paul Belmondo dominates 170 square metres of facade at 7 rue Jean Jaurès. Marilyn Monroe appears on Boulevard d’Alsace. Charlie Chaplin and the Kid gaze from Boulevard Vallombrosa. At Pont Alexandre III, “The Piano” and “Pulp Fiction” share space as Palme d’Or tributes. The passage Pierre Sémard houses a mural inspired by the 1954 Disney adaptation of Jules Verne’s “Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea”, complete with the Nautilus and Kirk Douglas battling a giant octopus. And at 95 avenue du Docteur Picaud, Vivien Leigh and Clark Gable recreate the kiss from “Gone With the Wind” in a 45-square-metre work by Elodie Iwanski completed in late 2024.
These murals reinforce Cannes’ identity as cinema capital, visible throughout the year when the Festival crowds disperse. The Ferrage tunnel mural breaks from this cinema tradition entirely but its 1980s manga references create a different kind of accessibility, familiar to anyone who grew up watching Japanese animation during that era. But while the manga characters provide moments of recognition for those who know the references, the overall composition works independently of specific cultural knowledge. That way, it creates a new shared memory across generations. And it demonstrates the city’s creative and open-minded spirit.
Placing such artwork in a tunnel is a courageous choice. Unlike building facades visible from the street, this work exists in transit. Drivers experience it whilst moving through the space it occupies. The effect is brief but memorable – a flash of colour brightening an ordinary journey across the city. Pop art and street art might seem far removed from red carpets, but they share the same purpose: making art visible, accessible, and part of daily life.
